I encourage you to please address your enquiry to the specific person,

rather than myself, should you already know what section of the magazine

you would be interested in knowing more about/contributing to. For all more

general enquiries or feature articles you can get in touch with me

personally and I'll try my hardest to get back to you asap.

THE FIRST DEADLINE FOR ARTICLES IS SATURDAY 11 OCT. I APOLOGIZE FOR

CHANGING THE DEADLINE (AGAIN!) BUT THIS SLIGHT EXTENSION IS MEANT TO GIVE

THE   PEOPLE WHO HAVE JOINED THE SOCIETY ON FRESHER'S FAIR  (121 PEOPLE) A

CHANCE TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE FIRST ISSUE.

THE THEME FOR THIS ISSUE IS: GET OUT OF THE BUBBLE!

The first issue is meant to come out on Monday 27 OCT and following ones on

24 NOV, 26 JAN, 23 MARCH and 25MAY respectively. The DEADLINE for these

will be 17 DAYS BEFORE each of them is meant to come out.

You'll also find there are two groups on Facebook. One is called Smiths

Magazine 2008/09, the other Smiths Contributors 2008/09. Now, whereas the

former is a group open to everyone (which we use to inform you of upcoming

parties and initiatives), the latter is a closed group. Some of you are now

part of it but have yet to join the society; these people are kindly

requested to join the society ASAP or you will be redirected to the other

group until you have sorted out payment. We encourage you to request to

join asap if you intend to become a contributor however, your request will

only be accepted once you have joined the society and paid the fee.

THE REASON WHY IT IS IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO BELONG TO THE FACEBOOK GROUP IS

THREE FOLD:

1)    It will be easier for me to get a hold of you (there are over 200 of

you!)

2)    It will make it easier for the other editors and I to target the

relevant audience with specific assignments.

3)     It will be easier for yourselves to keep track of what's happening

behind the scenes as an active part of the "making of" progress.

For those of you who have yet to join the society let me remind you that

SMITHS is a society of Goldsmiths student union and as such all prospective

members must pay a £5 joining fee. Your eligibility to contribute to the

making of the magazine is therefore conditional upon your joining of the

society and the payment of the fee.

Joining the society also works as subscription to any other magazine - you

will be guaranteed a copy of each issue.

Finally, society members will also be given a £1 discount on the door

prize at each of our launch parties, the first of which will take place

this coming Friday 10 Oct at the Student Union.

The aim for this year is to make Smiths come out as much as possible - last

year it only came out twice. The union has given us a budget of £5000 for

the year which we very much thank them for however, when you look into the

cost of printing it's fair to say that's not much at all. 1500 copies of a

48 page issue of minimum quality cost approximately £1500 to print. This

means that the budget as it stands will only pay for three issues over the

year.

OUR MAIN AIM SHOULD BE TO MAKE IT COME OUT AT LEAST FIVE TIMES. Now, how do

we do that? We join the society and we get everyone we know to come to our

parties! The money that is made at these events will all go towards

printing costs. Put it this way: IF WE GET 400 PEOPLE DOWN TO EACH PARTY,

WITH AN AVERAGE £4 ENTRANCE FEE, THAT'S £1600 TO FUND OUR NEXT ISSUE!!!!

All we really need is a further £3500 to be able to afford our five issues

and if we look at it, it's extremely doable. So, SPREAD THE WORD!!!!

See you at the party next Friday 10/10/2008,

Love
